Blowing the whistle on wrongdoing is an act of bravery – both because it requires speaking out and because it places the whistleblower in a vulnerable position for retaliation. Retaliating against a whistleblower is illegal. In many cases, so too is the behavior being reported. This is not reassuring. Companies should have mechanisms in place to protect whistleblowers from retaliation but are not required to do so. For government wrongdoing, the False Claims Act gives whistleblowers some anonymity at first, but even these will eventually result in a release of the whistleblower’s identity. As a whistleblower, this is simply an accepted risk. It is not a risk that needs to be undertaken alone.

You are legally protected against any type of mistreatment resulting from reporting wrongdoing, but may need an attorney on your side to ensure this happens.
